    Keep in mind, the book is intentionally told from a very biased and unreliable perspective. What the book portrays as a calculated assassination may well have been portrayed that way for political reasons, as a pair of bungling murderers who just chanced upon their target has far less pull for the kind of agenda the in universe author would be aiming for.

    Allan Watts wrote, "Now, there really isn’t anything radically wrong with being sick or with dying. Who said you’re supposed to survive? Who gave you the idea that it’s a gas to go on and on and on? And we can’t say that it’s a good thing for everything to go on living from the very simple demonstration that, if we enable everyone to go on living, we overcrowd ourselves. That we are like an unpruned tree. And so, therefore, one person who dies-in a way-is honorable, because he is making room for others. And the panic that all life, everywhere, must be saved-although each one of us, individually, will naturally appreciate it when anybody saves our life-if we apply that case, you see, all around, we can see that it is not workable. We can also look further into it, and see that if our death could be indefinitely postponed we would not actually go on postponing it indefinitely. Because after a certain point we would realize that that isn’t the way in which we wanted to survive. Why else would we have children? Because children arrange for us to survive in another way. By, as it were, passing on a torch so that you don’t have to carry it all the time. There comes a point where you can give it up and say, Now you work. It’s a far more amusing arrangement for nature to continue the process of life through different individuals, than it is with always the same individual. Because as each new individual approaches life, life is renewed. And one remembers how fascinating the most ordinary everyday things are to a child. Because they see them all as marvelous, because they see them all in a way that is not related to survival and profit. When we get to thinking of everything in terms of survival and profit value-as we do-then the shapes of the scratches on the floor cease to have magic. And most things, in fact, cease to have magic. So therefore, in the course of nature, once we have ceased to see magic in the world anymore, we’re no longer fulfilling nature’s game of being aware of itself. There’s no point in it anymore, and so we die. And so something else comes to birth, which gets an entirely new view. And so, nature’s self-awareness is a game worth the candle. It is not, therefore, natural for us to wish to prolong life indefinitely. But we live in a culture where it has been rubbed into us, in every conceivable way, that to die is a terrible thing. And that is a tremendous disease from which our culture, in particular, suffers. And we notice it, firstly, in the way in which death is swept under the carpet. This is one of the major problems in hospital work. When a family conspires with a doctor to keep from grandmother the knowledge that she is dying. Grandmother suspects that she is dying, but probably doesn’t really want to know for sure, and her family talk with her in such a way as to say, Well, you’ll probably be getting alright in a few weeks. Wouldn’t it be nice to do this, that, and the other? Because they have this funny feeling that it’s important to build up courage and hope. And so they become liars. And a mutual mistrust develops, because once you are playing the game on that level, you tend to play the mistrust on other levels. And so the person is left to die alone, suddenly, unprepared, and doped up to the point where death hardly happens. And there is no derivation from it-of the peculiar spiritual experience that can come with death."

    To everyone commenting on not liking the change to blood & cheese as far as Haelena goes... I think they intentionally made a contrast from the drama of the book with the "reality" of the show... The show a lot of times has specifically contrasted with the book, being a history later on recording the reports of the events of the time. I think the show is giving us the trauma of what growing up and living in a toxic family like the Targaryens does to a sensitive (neurodivergent) soul like Haelena: she doesn't beg and plead because she knows that won't work BECAUSE SHE'S SEEN WHAT HER FAMILY DOES. She makes an initial attempt at negotiation, and you can see the cautious calculation in her face, then when they explain they are here for revenge, she considers... And goes for the pragmatic option that saves the most people. EVEN B&C ARE SHOCKED at her response, but she gets the child she CAN save and she gets out of there as quickly and quietly as possible, because that's all she thinks she can do because she's always been ignored and her family has always hurt each other regardless of what she does or says. Not to mention she already "prophesized" this event... In her mind, it's inevitable now, and no one listened to her. I think next episode will have the characters reacting EXACTLY as the audience is to her doing this, and they will make up the dramatic story from the book to spread generally because it saves face for their house and it's more useful for their politics. But in the end Haelena is a Cassandra who increasingly becomes stoically and pessimistically nihilistic, because she can see what her family is doing to themselves, but NO ONE LISTENS so she can't stop it. That's the point of the contrast, and that I think it's going to be her response to her grief: not the dramatic storybook bombastic grief and dying of a broken heart, she's going to quietly go catatonic as she cannot cope with the trauma of seeing everyone she loves tear each other apart while ignoring her pain.

    Personally, I can’t help but shake the feeling that the writers were afraid of going too far with an on screen depiction of Blood and Cheese. It seems really stupid given the type of show this is, but maybe they thought killing a child was enough and that going any further would alienate the grandma’s watching, asking their kids which character is Khaleesi. It’s hard to justify leaving so much of the source material out, maybe they were trying to adjust the scene to the lack of Maelor existing (one of the Schröedinger’s children on this show) and genuinely didn’t think they were missing any of the beats. Most charitably, maybe they were trying to fit a broader theme for the show. Whatever the reason, and allowing for time and more episodes to reveal what they want to do with it, I can’t help but feel it playing out as written would’ve been far more intriguing of a hook for the season and would’ve given far more dramatic opportunities for the actors.

    • @CP-hn1zy
      @CP-hn1zy 42 хвилини тому

      It looks like Ryan Condal gave credence to the “without Maelor we didn’t know how to do the scene” explanation, which is massively disappointing. It’s been pretty shocking to see just how many commenters I’m finding online that are glad the scene was toned down because they didn’t think child murder should be shown on television. It can be really disappointing to see just what kind of “adults” the show’s writers have to often cater to who for some reason watch this show despite being incapable of seeing blood without letting out an audible squeal and dramatically covering their eyes with their hands.

    It would be nice to live as long as one would want to live. We're not really wired to deal with infinities and it's possible that entropy is not reversible, thus true infinite existence immortality might be impossible. But not dying when we don't want to die and not accruing wear and tear of life, age, chronic disease, all sound like good things and don't introduce anything crazy into the equation. I think if true infinite time immortality was possible the change from mortality to immortality would've been value neutral. It's just a fundamentally different form of existence probably with its own unforeseen upsides and downsides. Mind you, I consider being dead to be a value neutral state, while dying can be a negative or positive change depending on the circumstance. I'd generally prefer to be less reasons for death to be a best possible outcome from certain conditions, but being dead is neither a good or bad thing. We generally don't care all that much about the abyss of time we weren't born. Yet it's indistinguishable from being dead.

    I don't think democracy will survive immortality. An immortal leader who doesn't want to give up power. If it is ultra rich business people who gain monopolies. Kings, dictators, or democratic elected who decide that leaving office isn't their thing. Many of those systems could be destroyed because the successor couldn't hold on to power.

    The degeneration of the human body when aging has always felt so unfair to me. Imagine how nice it would be if humans worked like fantasy elves like we stop physically and mentally aging at our prime around 20-30 years old. And always when we turn exactly 100 years old we die and turn to dust. With this system humans could get so much more out of life than slowly getting weaker and sicker just hoping to die to escape the pain

    One of the scariest parts of the deed for me was that is was done in the light, and that it was drawn out. Like, Blood and Cheese wasnt in any rush, they could spend some extra time just adding suffering to the mothers. Reminds me of real world events, unfortunately. Yeah, It think the showrunners just couldtnt get themselves there, for whatever reason I think they didnt commit to it. However. the scene was extreme, the sound was horrible, it COULD have been so much worse and if I hadnt read the original I would just been blown away (as my wife who had no idea what was going to happen was) , so its, "disappointing" (dont really wanna use that word haha) for the more indepth gang, but I think those who have no idea what will happen cant really imagine it being more horrible. Also, they did add some scenes with the kid aswell, so that did make it worse... Yeah, I wouldve voted for them to do a bit more original from the scene, but it was still a great scene and a great first episode (people talking about S7 & s8 of GOT are just delusional)

    Blood & Cheese was just completely underwhelming to me. The build-up was great, them sneaking through the castle, trying to not get caught (minus the inexplicitly unguarded royal chambers), but the thing itself was just meh. It just felt like a weak reaction of Helaena to just feebly try to stop them by buying them off with her necklace and only once, too. These are your CHILDREN they are trying to murder, I would expect at least SOME sort of begging/negotiating/pleading. Also not having Alicent with her and instead having sex with Crispy in another room was an odd choice.

    Honestly, I don't like the book version of the choice. It's a bit too over the top evil? Even for Game of Thrones. Like that's the kind of scene you do for a literal demon from hell to show that they're the pure moustache-twirling embodiment of evil itself. So it came across as almost childish to me, like what you'd come up with after sitting there thinking "alright, what's the most evil possible thing I can have this character do?".

  • @aleegeri

    Could it be that the difference between the books and the show is the difference between reality and an embellished historical account? That would give the showrunners a great justification to deviate from the books and, at the same time, be an exploration of how the past can become distorted through biased historiography.

    Oh no, the decision to show the cycle of revenge as fundamentally uncontrollable is both extremely thematic for the show and was dramatic for me in the moment. This wasn't a moment of character development for Helena, but instead a moment of tragedy in a show that views a certain kind of malignant drive for balancing the scales as deeply unjust. It's not Helena's choice if this war is going to consume her family, and that die was cast before she was ever asked a single question

  • @-Sparagmos-

    I always took the book to be the Historical Account As Compiled By the Maesters (with all the speculation, exaggeration, and political redaction thereof) and the show to the actual events. So with the change to how Blood and Cheese killed Helena’s child, one might ask why the people recording it wanted to make the event more deliberate and horrific in the historical record than two bumbling catspaws opportunistically killing a child just so they could go back their employer with any blood. I like what the show did, I think, but we need to see the fallout.

    • @theodorsik
      @theodorsik 2 години тому

      This makes absolute zero sense in this case. You are saying that all three sources and Haelena and Rhaenyra later hallucinated entire child? Maelor is even on the family tree in the opening of the last episode of first season. By removing him the impact of the event lost the weight it held.

    • @tikko1023
      @tikko1023 2 години тому

      @theodorsik it's not them hallucinating events, it's showing that although they reported historical events, biases inevitably kicked from the viewpoints of a maester, a septon, and a court jester. Not to mention, they don't have complete accounts i.e. us seeing the Cole Pole in action on Queen Alicent, but they're going to assume Blood and Cheese held the women and children hostage because it's easier to explain away what they weren't there for.

    I really don't care about the opening credits it really doesn't matter, people criticizing it are weird it's just a stylish way of opening each episode. also does no creator understand Haelana is clearly on the autism spectrum. also B&C in the books is just gruesome horror story I'd rather have this makes less of a show of torturing actual children actors because they'd have to repeat the scene multiple times and the kids are very young like why? this is an adaptation they'll change this to better fit their themes and what is better for television

    • @jo0rd73
      @jo0rd73 2 години тому

      Yeah I even saw someone say they were disappointed with the change because this ruined the ‘opportunity for another red wedding moment’ as if the brutal psychological torture of a character just because is even in the same ball park as something as narratively masterful as the red wedding. They can still go with a similar route as the books without the unnecessary additional bs the books did. Helaena terrified gave up the life of her son and as she was leaving the room with her daughter in her arms heard her sons muffled scream and the sound of his head being sliced off his neck. That will obviously heavily weigh on her mind and mess with her without the need to further torture the character for the sake of shock factor.

      @@theodorsik Why would he force himself on her? They are a couple and they already had sex multiple times, what makes you think that a rape would happen?

    I thought it was a different video then somehow timed it coincidentally just right for both videos to play aligned.

    They had Maelor on the family tree last season. It makes no sense they cut him off, without any reason, causing Blood and cheese go hollow and succession onwards stupidly complicated. What now? Is Aegon going to force him self on Haelena? Did we sacrifice the kid to be able to have him abuse his wife? Aemond is now in line for the throne, what is stopping him from usurping throne after rooks rest then? Or are they going with “she swapped the kids and it is Jahaerys she saved” or “the kids were not the real deal” since she says “they killed THE BOY” instead of Jahaerys? I hate this. I love the show, but I hate this.

    In the German languge, the word for "deserving" and "gaining a wage" is the same. And I hate that.

    The fact you quoted Karel Capek is so amazing, almost no one in the writing circles I'm in knows or recognises his genius, this genuinely made my day - also thank you for the mental breakdown (joking) this video is gorgeous and painful and philosophically acute and I really love how much time and eloquence you put into these beautiful explorations of topics! thanks so much!

    Babylon 5 had an episode about this subject. An alien race had discovered a secret to immortality, but it required rendering 1000 humans down to do so. Humanities first war against an alien race came from this and we wiped them out. Except for one. Now the humans wanted to capture that one and get the formula. An interesting episode.

    Come join me watching House of the Dragon HERE ua-cam.com/video/Si7kHT_tQ5s/v-deo.html I think it's really interesting to see how female characters are attributed more malice/evil in the books than in the show-both Alicent and Rhaenyra. Female agency is a major theme in the story, and it exposes some of the interesting biases in Fire & Blood as a "history book". How did YOU feel about how they handled the ending? ~ Tim
